Black Turmeric

Black turmeric is a rare herb and is blue in color from the inside. It is the underground portion of the stem, or rhizome, of the Cucurma Caesia plant. The plant itself is sometimes grown as an ornamental, but the root has been used for centuries for medicinal and religious purposes. Black turmeric looks quite different than the more common orange turmeric. Black turmeric has an appearance that more closely resembles its cousin, the knobby ginger. The main stem, or rhizome, may have smaller rhizomes branching out, reaching from one to two inches in length. The outer part of the rhizome is a light brown, with rough areas. The flesh is a bluish-purple color that can appear entirely blue or in light and dark concentric circles, sometimes lighter in the center or just near the skin. Black turmeric has a pungent, camphor-like smell. It is somewhat bitter, with an earthy, hot taste. Black turmeric offers benefits similar to the orange variety, but the darker cultivar contains higher concentrations of curcumin than any other Curcuma species. In Hindi, the herb is called Kali Haldi. It is used widely in India for health and religious purposes.

Black turmeric is native to northeastern and central India where it has been part of cultural ceremonies and medicinal remedies. Black turmeric is used by many tribal communities in the state of Madhya Pradesh. The herb is sold fresh or dried in markets across India and Southeast Asia. As of 2016, Black turmeric has been listed as an endangered species by the Indian Agricultural Department. Efforts are being made to protect and conserve Black turmeric in Odisha (formerly Orissa), on the central-eastern coast, along the Bay of Bengal.

Black turmeric can be peeled, then cut into chunks, then blended along with kale, ginger, lemon, and cucumber for a health-boosted green smoothie. The health benefits are increased when the whole root is used, versus juicing.

Black Turmeric Benefits & Nutrition

The rhizome of kali Haldi has a bitter, sharp, hot taste, and a pleasant odor. It has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties and is laxative. It is used as a tonic for the brain and the heart. Rhizomes are useful in treating leucoderma, piles, bronchitis, asthma, tumors, and tuberculous glands of the neck, enlargement of the spleen, epileptic seizures, inflammations, and allergic eruptions. Black turmeric contains the highest concentrations of curcumin of any plant species. It is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. The root has been used medicinally for centuries to treat arthritis, asthma, and epilepsy. Black turmeric root is crushed and can be applied to bruises and sprains to ease discomfort or applied to the forehead to help relieve symptoms of migraines. The rhizome of the plant is aromatic, contains essential oil, and used for a variety of purposes. The characteristic pungent smell of the rhizome is due to the presence of essential oil rich in camphor and starch. The rhizome is traditionally used in the treatment of hemorrhoids, leprosy, asthma, cancer, fever, wounds, vomiting, menstrual disorder, anthelmintic, aphrodisiac, gonorrheal discharges, and inflammation. Black turmeric also provides relief from inflamed tonsils. When applied topically, black turmeric paste may provide relief from painful and stiff joints. Black turmeric is known to possess antioxidant and anti-fungal properties and may help in fighting inflammation in the body, as well as keep infections away.

*A•bani* which means "Of the Farm" in the Garo language and "Earth" in Sanskrit, is aptly named to represent the community that is closest to Nature - our farmers, and also the organic produce that the state of Meghalaya is known for. A few months ago, when the Covid – 19 crisis hit the world, it trickled into our cities, towns, villages, and homes. Everyone has been impacted in one way or another and we continue to see its devastating effects even today. Our governments and non-government organizations, including concerned individuals, have joined hands to fight this global disaster in their individual capacities and to ensure that no one is left behind in the efforts to help those affected. In contribution to the collective efforts, this initiative has been launched to help the farmers’ community of Meghalaya, especially those in interior villages, whose livelihoods depend on the sale of their produces in the markets. With the lockdown on all activities including markets, the farmers face the dangers of going into huge losses and losing their main source of income. This initiative has been designed to ensure that fresh farm produces does not go to waste for lack of markets and that the farmers are not exploited especially during the Covid-19 crisis and to create livelihoods related to the local agro-businesses. This includes non-farming job opportunities such as food processing and packaging, transportation and logistics, media, and marketing. Keeping in mind that Meghalaya has one of the largest numbers of unemployed youth in the country, this initiative strives to transform the community and create a big impact by acknowledging the inter-dependent collective of all members of the community through its various activities.
