Lakadong Turmeric

Lakadong Turmeric is the world's best turmeric that is grown in 'Lakadong,' located on the foothills of Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya. Unlike other varieties of turmeric, Lakadong turmeric powder contains 7-12.32% of curcumin, which is much higher than the 2-3% of the active ingredient that other turmeric varieties have. The higher content of curcumin in Lakadong turmeric from Meghalaya makes it more potent than other products.

What is the meaning of the name Lakadong Turmeric?

Long before Lakadong turmeric got its name, the golden-yellow spice used to be known as ‘Shangpung Turmeric’. Shangpung was among the most developed villages and was a market hub. Farmers from different villages come to this market to sell their farm produce and they bring their turmeric along to be grounded, packed and dispatched there. Hence, the name ‘Shangpung Turmeric’. Then eventually, farmers of Lakadong village realized the importance of the spice and started growing them in their gardens and everywhere in the village making it popularly known as Lakadong Chyrmit (turmeric). Lakadong is hard to trace on the map. The tiny, nondescript village at the foothills of the West Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya, is the heartland of a silent revolution. This is where the world’s finest variety of turmeric grows and is most favoured for its high curcumin content of more than 7%, as against 2 to 3% found in regular varieties available in the market. Curcumin, the key active ingredient in turmeric, is a miracle compound known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and renders a bright yellow colour to the spice. The higher the curcumin, the more prized the turmeric.

How to Store Lakadong Turmeric?

Lakadong turmeric can last for twelve months if it is properly stored. The powder does not get spoilt, but it will start to lose its potency with time and the flavour or show its benefits will not be as strong as intended. Here are a few simple steps to follow in order to keep your Lakadong Turmeric fresh for a longer duration.

Store the turmeric in an airtight container and remember to close the lid of the container tightly as soon as you finish using it. Before storing the spice in airtight containers, make sure the turmeric, as well as the bottle, is thoroughly dried because the presence of moisture will cause the turmeric powder to develop moulds. Coloured bottles are a better option to store the turmeric as it protects it from direct sunlight. If you are using clear bottles, remember to store them in closed cabinets or wall racks which do not receive direct sunlight. Store it away from stoves, ovens, windows, and do not keep it on the top of a refrigerator because the heat emitted from them causes the spice to lose its strength. Avoid storing it in plastic containers for a long time as this may absorb the smell of the plastic which is not very healthy.

*A•bani* which means "Of the Farm" in the Garo language and "Earth" in Sanskrit, is aptly named to represent the community that is closest to Nature - our farmers, and also the organic produce that the state of Meghalaya is known for. A few months ago, when the Covid – 19 crisis hit the world, it trickled into our cities, towns, villages, and homes. Everyone has been impacted in one way or another and we continue to see its devastating effects even today. Our governments and non-government organizations, including concerned individuals, have joined hands to fight this global disaster in their individual capacities and to ensure that no one is left behind in the efforts to help those affected. In contribution to the collective efforts, this initiative has been launched to help the farmers’ community of Meghalaya, especially those in interior villages, whose livelihoods depend on the sale of their produces in the markets. With the lockdown on all activities including markets, the farmers face the dangers of going into huge losses and losing their main source of income. This initiative has been designed to ensure that fresh farm produces does not go to waste for lack of markets and that the farmers are not exploited especially during the Covid-19 crisis and to create livelihoods related to the local agro-businesses. This includes non-farming job opportunities such as food processing and packaging, transportation and logistics, media, and marketing. Keeping in mind that Meghalaya has one of the largest numbers of unemployed youth in the country, this initiative strives to transform the community and create a big impact by acknowledging the inter-dependent collective of all members of the community through its various activities.
